Typical Overpayment Scams
The following emails were sent to numerous people with diverse properties for sale and rental in diverse European countries and or share significant similarities with others of this sort.CRIMINALS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT THEIR EMAILS ARE MONITORED AND CAN BE TRACKED BY THE POLICE. PROPERTY OWNERS SHOULD AVOID ENQUIRERS WHO DISPLAY SIGNS OF ANONYMITY. Not all scam enquiries can be stopped but we place examples of scam enquiries and others which bear significant resemblances here so that our clients and other potential victims can be alert. The best way for property owners to beat the overpayment scams is to require an up-front non-returnable deposit of 50% on booking on rental properties and the rest to be paid a month before travel.

The emails below are not in chronolgical order - so please glance down the page . . . It's difficult to know which to put first but the first one here is more general . . .
If you are advertising goods and services on the net, the chances are that at some stage you will be a potential victim of the overpayment scam. The "criminal cash back" scam is well known where goods advertised on the Internet are paid for with forged or counterfeit cheques and drafts that are made out to be over the advertised price, the victim paying excess back to the fraudster. Online job offer scams are likely to be linked. Here's how the scam works. If you have received one of these scam emails we have documented how you will have been targeted and how, with vigilence watching our real time statistics map, the scammers can be caught in their internet cafes in Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire.
At the root of the scams is payment by cheque, often from a third party, and an excuse to return some funds to another before the cheque to you has cleared:

Beware of numbers which start 0703 or +44-703 such as Mobiles: +44-7031-842888 +44-7031-943020 - these are not UK mobile numbers but personal numbers which redirect to any number anywhere in the world.
If you receive emails like this, you could usefully use spam protection services operated by people who really know what they are doing and where spam comes from. . . .
The following scam spam email is an interesting example on two counts:
- Notice that the ISP is operating an antispam system with "X-Spam-Status" which applies BAYES tests which allowed the email out, whilst our Non-Bayes system applying our sophisticated tests identified REALSPAM and PASSIONFRUIT. Such filters herald the end of spam to be in sight.
- If such a junk email does get through filter systems and it arrives on your doorstep in your mailbox, notice that he does not know what product he wants from amongst your stock and he can't remember what website he's seen it on. This is a spam example where a machine has sent out the junk email rather than any human being laboriously sitting in front of a computer. The "best" of these spam emails achieve success in their scam only when sent out in the time consuming laborous manner of visiting each website in turn, and then clients are in danger of getting caught. "How does this scam work?" wrote one of our clients - we can't tell you about this one in particular but you might be able to work it out from the collection of example junk emails and criminal activities that we identify in the spam bins.
- This junk email was sent not to a store with a product but to the owner of an apartment for rent client of www.latroba.co.uk
- Criminals trying to operate scams like this are advised to avoid sending to @antibes.co.uk and @xtraworld addresses, not only because they are protected by www.antespam.co.uk junk email protection, but also because the owners of rental accommodation and others using these protected addresses work as a cooperative, sharing information about any scams that get through the filters amongst themselves. The chances of scammers not succeeding are very high, as is also the chances of information about scammers coming to the attention of the police and other authorities.

Hey! Watch out there! In the webmaster's experience among his clients, Yahoo has one of the worst records of all ISPs for misidentifying real wanted emails as spam. Clients who have lost business as a result of Yahoo have ordered email boxes on our server at a cost of £50 per year. Yahoo might be free but it will cost a lot more in lost business. Some clients only received 30% of their "ham", their wanted emails. In the meantime, although junk mail from Yahoo is easy to identify, more junk like the above email comes from Yahoo than any other source. Because our spam filters are good we're more tired of Yahoo than spam.
